"We believe in treating the entire person, inside and outside," said Shareese Kess, Administrative Director of Clinical Services.

On Wednesday, TIME opened the door to their new self-care station at their Glen Burnie location. While people get help with substance misuse and mental health, they can get haircuts, styling and other grooming at no additional cost.

Counselor Jason Hamm-Bey says personal appearance has a huge impact on how clients feel.

"It helps their self-esteem greatly, because a lot of our clients come in from homeless situations, with mental health issues unaddressed, as well as substance-abuse issues, so it helps them feel better about themselves," he said.

TIME planned the grand opening at the end of Black History Month to pay homage to barber pioneers like Henry Miller Morgan, who opened America's first African American barber college. They said they also wanted to coincide with Women's History Month to honor icons like Madam CJ Walker, who became one of the wealthiest Black women of her time by selling hair products.

"We also recognize the fact that historically Black and Brown barbershops and beauty salons have been safe spaces for individuals," Kess said.

The idea started at TIME's west Baltimore location in 2020 in partnership with Rob's Barbershop Community Foundation as a way to make beauty and barber services more accessible.

That location has already provided 147 haircuts to 63 clients.

TIME says about 21% of their clients face barriers to grooming services. The free services they offer have changed the game for clients.

"We saw a large number of our clients completing their goals, their grooming goals, their employment goals, in large part because of the dignity and esteem that they developed by getting their grooming needs met. So, we wanted to emulate that here for our clients here at our Glen Burnie location," Kess said.

William Caldwell is the first client to benefit from the new self-care station.

"It feels good that it is free, because it costs a lot right now in the barber shops. It costs a lot, especially for a person that's, like, struggling and coming from nothing," Caldwell said.

Robert Cradle of Rob's Barbershop said he wants to help clear a path forward for those too often left behind.

"We remove the barrier of income, transportation, (and) disability. It's everything here. It makes it totally accessible when it is on-site where the population exists," Cradle said.

As TIME Organization continues to expand its self-care stations, they need barbers and beauticians to volunteer. Anyone interested can email Kess at skesslewis@timeorganization.org.
